Mildura's Mayor officially launched the local LTE (Long-Term Evolution) 4G system, which will eventually supersede Telstra's 3G system, which is already approaching capacity locally.
Telstra Country Wide's Area General Manager, yesterday demonstrated the 4G system's blazing speed using a laptop computer fitted with a USB plug-in 4G receiver-transmitter.
He said the 4G system, operating at its maximum speed of about 50 megabits per second, offered download speeds up to 10 times faster than the obsolescent 3G system - a laptop user sitting in Centro Plaza could download a typical five-megabyte MP3 music track in a few seconds.
Although 4G service is currently accessible only to computer users - He says Telstra is working with mobile phone manufacturers to make it available to mobile phone users."...
